Applause is a 1929 black and white film “backstage” musical, shot in the early talkies. It ‘very important as one of the few films of his time to break free from the constraints of sound technology. Based on a novel by Beth Brown, the film was directed by Rouben Mamoulian and staging. [1]
The film stars Helen Morgan, Joan Peers, Fuller Mellish Jr., Mae West was originally considered for the role of Kitty Darling, but the studio decided it would be fascinating stage presence Morgan undercut tackier aspects of the story.
The National Board of Review Applause appointed one of the ten best films of 1929.
In 2006, applause was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” (Paprika Steen) has gone through turmoil. Having divorced her husband, Christian (Michael Falch), and left the custody of their two children during his days drinking heavily, Thea wants to get started. While his past indiscretions, and alcohol consumption continues to haunt her, the reality of a new beginning seems bleak. Thea uses her inner charm and manipulation of actresss her ex-husband that she fully recovered and able to be a good mother for their children to convince, but not fully convinced themselves. On stage, Thea plays binge-drinking, eye-catching Martha Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Ironically, his character on stage is a similarity with his personal life. If his alcoholism and regret of the past in the balance, Thea must decide whether to confront his inner demons, or to leave the show go on.
